Cinnamon Rolls

In my opinion, one of the very best of breakfast treats is the quintessential cinnamon roll. The aromatic and almost savory cinnamon combined with the sweet caramel-like flavor of brown sugar and the rich and tangy creaminess of a cream cheese frosting makes for a satisfying treat for anyone with a sweet tooth.

Previously, my family and I would turn to the cans found in the freezer section of the grocery store to satisfy our cinnamon roll needs. A couple of years ago however, I found the perfect recipe from Food Network’s Alton Brown.

Although the results of this recipe are delicious, the journey of making these rolls is difficult for those who have busy schedules and a lack of extreme cinnamon roll obsession. The idea of being to whip up this treat within minutes is intriguing to say the least, and that is where this recipe for 4-Minute Mug Cinnamon Rolls from Tasty into play.

The preparation for both doughs was very similar, with the exception of substituting of pancake mix for normal flour in Tasty’s recipe. The procedures for rolling out the dough and forming the spirals were also alike in both recipes. The cooking procedures, of course, were varied between the microwave and oven.

Ultimately, the biggest difference in the actual procedure was the rising and proofing times. For the mug recipe, there was no waiting necessary between dough making, shaping the rolls, and baking. The traditional recipe, on the other hand, required a minimum of 11 hours of waiting time from the moment you start mixing to the finished product.

Baking aside, the standard recipe yielded results that were on par with everything you expected from a cinnamon roll. The microwave “4 minute” recipe, despite the advertised quick time, proved to take longer than claimed and yielded results that were far from pictured and almost inedible. There was a pool of cinnamon water at the bottom of the cup and the dough failed to puff up and seemed raw to the touch and taste. In this case, the quality and experience gained from the traditional oven recipe seems to override the convenience of the microwave.
